Why Join the Junior League?
Membership in the Junior League of Birmingham provides many opportunities for training, advocacy in our legislature and making a positive impact on the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.
By joining the JLB, you join a group of dedicated volunteers from a wide range of professions: Law, Medicine, Marketing, Engineering, Non-Profit, Transportation, Local Government, Nursing and Education.
Our Active Members range in age from 20’s to 50’s and many are from outside Southeast Michigan, having transferred from other states with family or work situations. If you are looking to increase your involvement and your connections, this is a great way to do it.
Legacy Partners and Volunteerism
Common Ground and CARE House Oakland are legacy organizations, JLB members participated in the establishment of these organizations.
CARE House of Oakland County:
Advocacy and State Public Affairs Work with the State of Michigan
One of the few states with a statewide advocacy network, the Michigan Council of Junior Leagues (MSC) State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) works with a dedicated lobbying firm in Lansing, to advocate and partner with legislators for the children of Michigan. Our focus in the last several years has been on Human Trafficking and more recently, we have started a focused examination in the Michigan Foster Care System.
What is the Time Commitment as an Active member?
As a provisional member, you are introduced to the League mission and given opportunities to volunteer for our programs, attend trainings and take on leadership roles. As a general rule, new members and active members should expect to give a couple hours a week or 5-10 hours a month volunteering or attending meetings or social events as you schedule allows.
If you decide to take on a leadership role, the time commitment increases but also has flexibility. Many of our members work and have children, many travel for work. We understand life is in constant motion and we strive to be flexible to make membership work for our members.
Can I Attend Events as a Non-Member?
Absolutely! All of our events are open to the public. Check our Calendar on the website or go to our Estore to sign up for our wide ranging calendar of activities including: Triva Nite, Little Black Dress Luncheon, Touch a Truck and many more.
What is the financial responsibility of membership?
Our annual budget is based on both dues and fundraising to fund our community programs.
Membership Dues for Active members and Fall Provisional Class members are $160 per year. Dues for Winter/ Spring Class are $100. This includes the AJLI (Association of Junior League International) dues of $43 per member.
In addition to dues, we ask that members make a financial contribution by attending and /or donating to our events or annual fund.
For Active members, the donation requirement is $200 per fiscal year. New Members fundraising requirement is $100 or less depending on the provisional class they are in. The first year of membership is the biggest investment because annual dues for current year are paid after fiscal year starts and the next fiscal year dues are due March 1st. Our fiscal year is July 1– June 30th.
Is There a Minimum Expectation for Volunteering?
Yes, we do ask that all members contribute 10 volunteer hours to support our events outside of a committee placement annually.
